Estimates only. Assumptions are listed below, and you can change every input.

A cellar quote covers the build, the racking and the cooling unit. It rarely covers what the cellar costs to run: the compressor drawing power all summer, the service visits, and the day the unit needs replacing. Those numbers decide whether a cellar is cheaper over time than offsite storage or a pair of large wine fridges.

The calculator takes your upfront costs and the cooling unit's running wattage, applies a duty cycle to estimate annual kilowatt-hours, and prices them at your electricity rate. It adds a service allowance and a replacement reserve for the cooling unit, divides by your bottle count for a per-bottle figure, and projects a ten-year total. The defaults are placeholders rather than benchmarks; enter your own quotes.

How to use this tool

  1. Enter the quoted build, racking and cooling system costs, or keep the placeholders while you shop.
  2. Find the running wattage on the unit's spec sheet and estimate how much of the year it will run.
  3. Enter your electricity rate and typical bottle count to see the annual and per-bottle figures.

What the math assumes

  • Annual energy equals running watts x 8,760 hours x duty cycle. Fans, lighting and a humidifier are not included; add their draw to the watts if they run often.
  • Annual service and cleaning is assumed at 2% of the installed cooling system cost unless you fold a service contract into that figure.
  • The cooling unit is assumed to last 8 years, so one eighth of its installed cost is set aside each year as a replacement reserve.
  • The ten-year total is the upfront build, racking and cooling cost plus ten years of running cost; it excludes financing, insurance and any change in home value.
  • Cost per bottle per year covers running costs only, not the upfront build.

Frequently asked questions

How much electricity does a wine cellar cooling unit use per year?

A 600 W unit running 40% of the time uses about 2,100 kWh a year, roughly 360 USD at 0.17 USD per kWh. A glass cellar in a warm climate can double both the duty cycle and the bill.

Is a private wine cellar cheaper than offsite storage?

Often on running cost alone, since about one dollar per bottle per year is well below most professional storage fees. The comparison turns on the upfront build and how many bottles you actually keep, which is why the ten-year total is shown.

Should the replacement reserve be a real savings account?

It does not have to be, but budgeting for it avoids the surprise when a compressor fails in year eight. Split and ducted systems often last longer and can justify a smaller reserve.
